Scratch Resistant (Hard Coat)
This coat does not make the lenses scratch proof, but certainly scratch resistant. However, they do make the lenses more durable by protecting the lenses from everyday minor scratches, and so prolonging the lifespan of the lenses. The reduction of everyday scratches helps keep the lenses clearer, and give more comfort and clarity long term.
Multi-Layer Coatings (MAR)
Assuming you want the optimum vision for your prescription, the decision becomes which anti-reflection MAR coating to choose. Standard MAR Coating as supplied as standard by most optical companies, or you can pay to upgrade to a better upgrade to a superior coating. Many of our lenses include the superior SmartPlus MAR coating in the price quoted.
Standard Anti-Scratch/Anti-Reflection (MAR) Multi – Layer Coat
As well as protecting the lens surfaces from everyday scratching, MAR reduces distracting reflections on the lens surfaces. Reducing reflected light is particularly helpful for computer users and for night driving. An Anti-reflection coat can improve the cosmetic appearance of your glasses, and is especially effective with rimless glasses. It can enhance the appearance of thicker lenses, making them appear thinner. This coating is also hydrophobic so rain runs off the lens and will clear quicker if the lenses get steamed up.
For the best protection see the Superior SmartCoat Plus below. (Included with many of our lenses as standard.)
Superior Multi Clean MAR – SmartCoat Plus
With SmartCoat Plus A special hard lacquer enhances the level of scratch protection, making it more durable, extending the lifespan of the lenses, keeping vision clearer for longer. SmartCoat Plus has all the properties of an everyday (MAR) Coating, only much better, making the lenses comparable with many of the best branded MAR coated lenses on the market today.
With standard spectacle lenses only about 92% of the light that reaches the spectacle lens reaches the eye. A significant 8% of light is reflected back, away from the eye. The reflections you see in a standard lens are the 8% of light being ‘bounced’ back off the lens.
With SmartCoat Plus anti-reflection lenses 99% of light passes through the lens. Reflections are reduced to just 1%. So you can see almost zero reflections from an anti-reflection lens.
SmartCoat Plus makes the lens surface ultra smooth, making it more difficult for dust and dirt to adhere. As dirt, grease and dust are more noticeable through the anti-reflection properties, the anti-static and clean coat aspects of the coating are a huge help in keeping the lenses clean and clear for longer. The hydrophobic properties make water bead off the surface, helping keep the lens clear in wet weather and helps avoid misting.

UV Protection (UV)
This coating comes as standard with all of myr tinted lenses. I always use full UV400 to maximise eye protection from harmful UV-A and UV-B rays from the sun, a major cause of Cataracts and Macular Degeneration.
Don’t let darker lenses fool you into thinking they offer more protection from UV rays, either. The darkness of the lens does not accurately represent the lenses’ ability to block UV rays.
Always check the label on your lenses to see what level, if any, of UV protection they offer. Also, remember that dark sunglasses without UV protection will cause more damage to your eyes than not wearing sunglasses at all. Darker tints can cause the pupil to dilate, letting more UV rays into the inner part of the eye.
Tints – Solid
Solid tints, meaning the shade is the same all over the lenses, are available in just about any colour. They are all available in 3 depths of colour like the grey and brown tints below. Available as prescription or non prescription lenses.
You have a choice of 3 shades of Grey, or 3 shades of Brown for your tinted lenses.
Coatings and Tints – Dark Grey
is a very good choice for anyone who is light sensitive, and finds heavy glare and bright sunny days a problem. It allows for true colour recognition, so colours remain the same. The blue sky remains blue etc. An excellent choice for holidays abroad, driving, and deep-water sports like fishing and sailing.
Coatings and Tints – Mid Grey
offers the same qualities as dark grey, but to a lesser degree. Also a good shade for tinted reading glasses for outdoor use.
Coatings and Tints – Light Grey
again offers the same qualities as the grey, but only partially. Can also be worn indoors if glare from TV, fluorescent lights etc is a problem.
Coatings and Tints – Dark Brown
is a good choice for anyone with particularly strong prescriptions, as it improves clarity and depth perception. Colour perception can change a fraction, eg. A blue sky will appear more grey in colour when seen through a brown tint. A very good for driving, outdoor sunny sports like golf, and the increased depth perception can help when shallow water fishing.
Coatings and Tints – Mid Brown
offers the same qualities as dark grey, but to a lesser degree. Also a good shade for tinted reading glasses for outdoor use.
Light Brown offers the same qualities as the grey, but only partially. Can also be worn indoors if glare from TV, fluorescent lights etc is a problem
Graduated tints are when the tint is darker at the top of the lens, graduating to a lighter shade towards the bottom of the lens. They are available in the same colours as all the solid tints. Just call and ask for details if you require a particular shade.
Tinted Lenses or Polarized Lenses – Which do I need?
While tinted sunglasses are great for reducing brightness, they don’t eliminate harsh glare like polarized sunglasses. All available as prescription or non prescription lenses.
Sports and Polarized Lenses
For years, boaters and fishermen have reaped the benefits of wearing polarized sunglasses. More recently, however, the benefits of polarization have been embraced by a variety of other outdoor sports enthusiasts and those who enjoy general outdoor recreation. Water-sport athletes, golfers, cyclists, and joggers can all benefit from sunglasses with polarized lenses.
A Grey polarized lens works well in a variety of conditions. Great for driving in it offers absolute true colour reception without distortion, and can be worn all day with minimum eye fatigue. It’s ideal for maximum glare reduction in intense sunlight. Very good for bright showery days as the lenses cut through the glare and rain so vision is much better.
A Copper- Brown polarized lens blocks undesirable blue light while improving contrast in other colours. It is excellent for shooting targets against a green background on a bright day and ideal for activities such as sight fishing and hiking.
Polarized lenses are available in brown grey or green. They come in standard 1.49 thinner 1.60 and super thin 1.67 lenses
They come as dark lenses like G/B 1 or lighter lenses like G/B2
Poloarized lenses are also available with a selection of mirror finishes. eg: Blue, Grey, Green, Gold, Purple, Silver…just ask for whatever colour you’d like if it isn’t listed. we can probably supply it. Polarised lenses are always a solid tint, they are not available as graduated tints.
