Don’t worry if you are in any way unsure about how to choose which lenses are the right ones for you.
I’ll always advise you over the phone regarding which lenses are best suited to your own individual prescription, as well as answer any queries you might have about any particular lenses. Below is a rough guide to help work out the cost of new lenses.
Service Above and Beyond
Being a varifocal virgin my needs were several but Catherine provided out of the ordinary help,
advice and a quality product all at her super price – I’ll be back.
Many thanks again
Do you need standard lenses, thin lenses or extra thin lenses –
and what’s the difference?
Generally speaking the stronger your prescription the thicker and heavier the lenses will be. Therefore standard lenses with a strong prescription could be very thick and unsightly. Looking at your optical prescription can give you a basic guide to choosing your lenses. Look at the Sphere box (Sph) on your prescription, then look at the Cylinder box (Cyl), taking the +/- into account, add these numbers together.
eg: -2.25 Sph added to -1.00 Cyl = -3.25 or -2.00 Sph added to +1.25 Cyl = -0.75
If the Sph and Cyl total over 4 then thinner lenses need to be used as the lenses will be fairly thick.
eg: +2.75 Sph added to +1.50 = +4.25
Prescriptions can look very confusing, so don’t worry if this all sounds too much to take in. This is purely a guide.
Rest assured I will always be choosing the lenses for you, but you can call me on 01253 795523 and I’ll explain what it all means.
The friendly, knowledgeable advice Catherine gives is invaluable. Can’t tell you how pleased I am with my new glasses. Better than the ones from my usual optician and almost half the price they quoted me. I will be back in the future.
I Recommend That You Choose
A standard lens (1.5) if your combined prescription value is less than 3.00 (plus or minus) – not suitable for rimless frames
A thin lens (1.6) if your combined prescription value is between 3.00 and 5.00 (plus or minus) – suitable for all frames including rimless
An extra thin lens (1.67) if your combined prescription value is 6.00 or over (plus or minus) – suitable for all frames including rimless
Super thin lens (1.74) if your combined prescription value is 8.00 or over (plus or minus) – Note: not all lenses are available in 1.74 – and are not always suitable for rimless frames
These are only flexible recommendations. Once I have seen your frame I will advise on the very best lenses suitable for your prescription, taking into account the size and shape of your frame.
A Fantastic Service
Catherine provides a fantastic service. I had a new prescription so decided to purchase the frames online and send them to Catherine to fit new varifocal lenses. As others have said, the whole process from ordering to delivery, including sound advice from Catherine on the type and quality of lens to choose, was first class. A thoroughly professional service, highly recommended.
Standard 1.5 lenses are not a good choice for any rimless frames for two reasons. Firstly, they’re not very durable so are likely to crack where the holes are drilled to fit the rimless frame. Secondly, as part of the glazing process, the lenses have to be cut a little thicker than for standard lenses. This makes the lenses look thicker and adds to the weight.
For these reasons 1.6 1.67 Polycarbonate or Trivex lenses are recommended for rimless frames. These lenses are thinner and lighter, but also much stronger so a much better choice for durability.
1.74 are occasionally unsuitable for rimless frames as they are very brittle and less flexible than other lenses. In this instance we would look at the frame first to advise whether 1.67 or the 1.74 would be the most suitable lenses for the frame.
Please note: As rimless glazing is more technical and takes quite a bit longer to process than full or half rim frames, the factory charge me £10 extra to glaze any rimless frames. This needs to be added to the cost when rimless frames are being sent for new lenses.
Polycarbonate vs. Trivex Lenses:
Both lens types are tougher, lightweight lenses usually recommended for rimless frames, safety glasses, children’s frames, or anyone needing tougher lightweight lenses.
A Quick Comparison of the 2 types of tougher lenses
Here is a brief comparison of Polycarbonate and Trivex lenses to help decide
which lenses might be best for you:
: Thickness. Polycarbonate has a higher index of refraction than Trivex (1.58 vs. 1.53), so polycarbonate lenses are about 10 percent thinner than Trivex lenses.
·: Weight. Trivex has a lower specific gravity than polycarbonate, making Trivex lenses about 10 percent lighter than polycarbonate lenses.
· Optical clarity (central). Trivex lenses have less internal stress and may produce sharper central vision than polycarbonate lenses.
: Optical clarity (peripheral). Trivex lenses have a higher Abbe value and may produce sharper peripheral vision with less chromatic aberration than polycarbonate lenses.
: Impact resistance. Polycarbonate and Trivex lenses have comparable impact resistance.
: UV protection. Polycarbonate and Trivex lenses both block 100 percent of the sun’s UV rays without the need for special UV-blocking lens coatings
: Availability. Polycarbonate lenses are available in a wider variety of lens designs (e.g., varifocal and other multifocals) than Trivex lenses. Transitions are available in both materials.
: Cost. The cost of polycarbonate and Trivex lenses can vary considerably, but many optical stores charge considerably more for Trivex lenses than polycarbonate lenses. The cost price of both types is the same for most lenses, therefore at Reglazeglasses4U the cost of polycarbonate and Trivex lenses is the same in most lens types.

Exceptional Personal Service
I’ve just rec’d a pair of varifocal glasses from Catherine. I did not get this level of service from my high street optician.
They would not provide the PD measurement but Catherine talked me through the process and the results are perfect. I had tried an online ‘factory’ reglaze company but after 3 phone calls and an email and still not having the full picture I was about to give up when I found this site.
I couldn’t be more pleased. Catherine drove 15 miles to ensure my glasses were completed and with me in time for a wedding. That’s a brilliant service.
Deep and Shallow Frames for Varifocal Lenses
The other consideration with varifocal lenses is the size of the frame. I’d normally advise to get a frame with a depth of at least 30mm to give space for good distance, reading and middle distance prescriptions. Shallow frames (about 25mm) can still be used but the varifocal lenses will need to be adapted for this.
The distance (top) and reading areas (bottom) will still be as good as ever, but the middle distance which is for computer use etc will be a little smaller in depth. This means there will be a smaller area of lens to see a computer screen through etc. These are called Compact Varifocal Lenses and have an additional £10 cost as they have to be specially made to fit into smaller frames.
If your frame is shallow, but is also a half rim frame, I can add a couple of mm to the depth of the lenses. This is really useful if your frame is shallow but you would like full varifocal lenses for computer use etc. This will alter the look of the lenses slightly, but give a good middle distance area to the lenses, improving middle vision.
I have done this very successfully on many occasions, so it isn’t a problem to do. There is no extra charge for this service. (This can only be done on a half rim or rimless frame, never on a full rimmed frame)

I have had my new varifocal glasses for about two weeks and am highly impressed with both the quality of the lenses and the service from Catherine. She was able to put new lenses into an old pair of very lighly used distance frames which I was keen to keep. Absolutely no problem. I now have a pair of top of the range transitions varifocal specs for half the price of a new pair from the High Street. Many thanks Catherine, I’ll be back for more soon.
I do not supply the very basic design of varifocal lenses that are readily available on the market as my primary aim is to give excellent vision. The very basic varifocal lenses often cause uncomfortable amounts of peripheral distortion and a poor standard of vision all around.
Using a computer with them or playing sports like golf are virtually impossible. Sadly, I’ve seen lots of people after they have already tried these poor quality lenses, and have either suffered poor vision as long as they could stand it, or they have wasted their money and their glasses sit in a drawer unworn.
I often tell people that my lenses aren’t the cheapest on the market, and for just a few pounds less they can get the cheap very basic varifocal lenses. I also add though, that as far as the different qualities of varifocal lenses goes, the saying “You get what you pay for” rings very true.
Generally speaking, the better quality your varifocal lenses are, the clearer, and more comfortable your vision will be.
I strongly advise to buy the best varifocal lenses that your budget can stretch to, it really does make a big difference to your vision, and the general comfort of your eyes. My prices for Essilor Varifocal Lenses are very competitive compared to the high street, also making them a very popular choice.

Varilux X Design Varifocal Lenses
In May 2017 Essilor launched their very latest lenses the X Series Digital Varifocal Lenses. As our varifocal needs have changed with the way we now work and play, Essilor have taken all that into account by designing the most up to date lenses yet.
It’s now well into 2019 and the feedback that we’ve been getting from the X Series is amazing. Already one of our best selling lenses. we’ve sold 100’s already, and we’ve not had one negative comment about them. Without a doubt, now they’ve been tried and tested by the public, they have certainly proved to be among of the worlds finest varifocal lenses ever made.
Here in Essilor’s own words.
“The first varifocal providing total visual freedom. Varilux X series is the first varifocal lens to dramatically reduce head movement and ensure that your vision is as natural as possible for every day activities within arm’s reach and beyond. Varilux X series is the best varifocal we’ve ever designed.Your posture and the way you look at things up close have changed. You’re now drinking coffee while texting the kids, sending an email via a tablet on the train or checking your social news feed every other hour. In short, everything that matters today happens within arm’s reach. Before now, no varifocal lens has been designed to accommodate these modern day behaviours and therefore you had to, ‘point your nose to where you want to look at’.Varilux X series removes this limitation resulting in much less head movement, making vision as natural and comfortable as possible with varifocal lenses. ”
